William Saroyan's Favorite Food Recipes

16 Oct 2018

Today, October 16, is the World Food Day! As a part of the celebration, we are sharing Saroyan's favorite food recipes.

  • Lamb

Add about half gallon water to one-gallon water of pickles.

Add 3-4 pounds of lamb chops to this liquid. Boil it for about half an hour. After boiling add 3-4 pounds of pickled cabbage and a cup of washed, beforehand cracked wheat. After the cracked wheat is boiled, add 6-7 diced tomatoes and bring it to a boil over a medium-low heat for about an hour.

  • Stuffed vegetables

Stuff tomato, pepper, marrow, eggplant with small balls made of beaten bulgur and minced meat. The balls can be wrapped in grape leaves as well. To reduce garlic and meat flavor or to remove the unpleasant taste of dried eggplant or any other ingredient, you can add dried apricots and peaches.

  • New bread

Take a piece of bread dough, flatten it, fry it with oil or butter in heated frying pan. After a golden crust has formed on one side, turn to another side. The frying time is about 6 minutes. It goes well together with tea, but not with cacao, coffee or any other drinks.

  • Malibu omelette

Take olive oil, as it is cheaper than butter and is healthier for growing boy or man. 3 cloves of garlic, as fried in sizzling olive oil: garlic seasons oil and it gets a very appetizing taste and flavor. Some chopped pepper (paprika). 2 or 3 parsley twigs. Cheese of any kind, anything that you will find, small or big pieces- it doesn't matter. Fried fish Fry small fish without removing entrails and cutting heads. Can be served with bulgur.

  • Pickles (Pickled foods)

Shred a head of cabbage, place it into a crock, add some salt, a piece of bread and some leaven. Fill crock to the brim with tepid water and cover it with plate putting some weight on it so that the raw stuff would be pressed to the bottom. Try out a week or ten days after. Turnip greens, a stalk of celery, green tomato, etc. can be added as ingredients if desired. Pickles can be used (served) separately or as an ingredient for any meal.

  • Mexican bean soup

Take 99 red beans, half a liter of water, 1 onion, 1 pepper (paprika), 4 parsley twigs, 4 cloves of garlic, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 3 tomatoes, red and black ground pepper. Boil it till the granules soften and the whole mass becomes a more condensed mash while being steamed. Two hours (of boiling) over medium-low heat(would be enough), but the three wouldn't go amiss.

  • Pasta Pilaf

First of all, boil the pasta and drain it. Pour one cup of olive oil on half-cooked pasta, add tomato paste, and then add white cheese. Open one of the flat oval cans with Monterey's sardines and chop 3 of 6 fish, mix it with other ingredients in the container.
